Valuable points in Tongyeong for triathlete Emy Legault

October 30 2018

Emy Legault is native of L'Île-Perrot. The 22-year-old is currently training to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in her discipline, the triathlon.

The Chevrolet Buick GMC Ile-Perrot ambassador is currently in Asia, where she participates in her last competitions for the year 2018. Last weekend, Emy Legault participated in the Tongyeong World Cup in South Korea, on sprint distance. This was her first competition of this magnitude since her recent injury.

During this competition, the athlete offered her best performance in two of the three triathlon disciplines. Here is a story, in her own words, of her experience:

"The level of racing was rather high in Tongyeong, and I did not really know what to expect! I knew I was able to get a good result, but since we are in the middle of qualifying, all athletes are in top form. I knew that I would have to fight for each position.

The dive start was given at 9:30 am local time. I make a good start and I calmly get away from the rest of the girls. However, I get a blow to the face after 100 meters, which fills my goggles. It was the last moment I could see something for the next 9 minutes! I try to follow the girls as best I can and I think I'm in a very bad position. However, at the exit of the water, running towards my bike, I see the leading girl a few meters in front of me. That's when I realize that I just did my best swim in this level of racing. I came out top 15 of the water, 15 seconds from the first.

I make the fastest transition for the girls to the cycling event and I'm the last to hang on to the top eight girls. We try to organize quickly, since the hunting squad is very close behind. However, few girls go to work. After 3 kilometers, 20 girls join us. From that moment, we all knew that it would be played in running. I made the decisions that seemed to me the smartest in the pack to give me the best luck for the last part of the race.

Arrived in transition, the bike rack gives me a lot of difficulty and I go out 11 seconds behind (which will eventually cost me 4 positions in the end). I managed to get back on half of the girls in the peloton running one of my best race splits to finish in 16th place, just over a minute from the first. (50 girls at the start) This was definitely my best running performance at this level, which gives me very important points in the Olympic ranking.

I have one last race here in Asia, in Japan, in a little over 10 days. It will be an Olympic distance, so more points to go. Then, I return to Montreal for 3 weeks to take a rest before starting over in 2019!"
