To counteract package theft and make life easier for consumers, GM and Amazon offer delivery service directly to the trunk of your car.
This service is now available and free to Amazon Prime members with an active GM On Star account. For the e-commerce giant, this alliance is advantageous because a large part of its revenue depends on delivery quality and speed. With the expansion of Amazon and the increase in the number of competitors, Amazon and GM have broken new ground to help consumers.
Amazon Key technology
The service is quite simple for consumers to use. Simply download the Amazon Key app to locate the car in several places. The service is currently available on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac cars from 2015 or newer. At this time, the program can target up to 7 million cars in North America and is available in 37 cities in the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
The service requires access to your car, which some customers obviously may be reluctant to grant. Amazon uses an authentication process to ensure that the correct delivery driver is in the correct place with the correct package, unlocks the car and locks it again once the delivery is complete.
With a rather modest start and the discovery last year of a fault in the home delivery system, Amazon Key, similarly to Amazon Home Delivery, allowed the driver to temporarily disable the security camera and wander into the customer's home. Customers now prefer, with good reason, to have delivery in their car.
Now, with car trunk delivery, the service is much less invasive than when a stranger enters your home. We’re hoping to have a similar program available soon in Canada.
